Music, photo, and video formats

Though the end products are the same – one can listen to music and view photos and videos, there are varying file formats for each type of media.

Certain programs may be needed to access different file formats. Here are the most commonly used formats for each type of media.

Music

Perhaps the most popular is the MP3 format, which can be played back by most media players.

Another popular format is Windows Media Audio (WMA), which is the main format developed by Microsoft.

Of course, one cannot overlook the Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) format as it is the default format of the Apple iPod and iTunes.

Photos

The most commonly used format for photos is the Joint Photographic Expert Group (JPEG). In fact, most digital cameras save images using this format.

The disadvantage of this format is the fact that it does lose some of the details in the image.

Another popular format is the Tagged Image File Format (TIFF).

Perhaps a more familiar format is the Graphic Interchange Format (GIF) and is mostly used for simple images and supports animation.

Formats for video files are a little bit more complicated than the other two media types.

Moreover, some video formats are not read by specific media players. This creates the need for conversion from one format to another.

Some of the most common formats for video files are AVI, 3GP, MOV, and MP4.
